About Photo Errant

Updated on

Photo Errant is an independent guide to scanners for the things families keep: loose prints, photo albums, slides, negatives and stacks of paper.

We help you pick the right type of scanner for your pile, then show you how to get clean, useful scans at home.

You don't need to know scanner terms to use our guides. We explain dpi, CCD, duplex and file types in plain words when they matter.

What we cover

Our guides cover flatbed photo scanners, auto-feed photo scanners, film and slide scanners, and portable, duplex and wireless document scanners. We look at models from makers like Epson, Canon, Kodak, Plustek, Brother and ScanSnap.

We also write how-to guides on resolution, file formats, cleaning prints, splitting group scans and keeping scanned photos organized.

What we do

We read the product details, specs and maker information for every scanner we cover. We also look at what buyers often say after using one.

Then we turn it all into plain guides, side-by-side matchups and clear picks. Our How we research page explains the steps.

What we don't do

We don't make or sell scanners, and no brand pays us to rank its products.

Photo Errant isn't affiliated with Epson, Canon, Kodak, Plustek, Brother, ScanSnap or any other maker.

We don't claim to have tested every scanner ourselves. When we pick one, we tell you why, based on its specs, its features and buyer feedback.

How we earn money

Some links on this site go to stores like Amazon. If you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

That never changes which scanners we pick. Our affiliate disclosure has the details.
